Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a treatment of improper bites (malocclusions). Improper bites can result due to a variety of reasons that include crowded teeth, overbite, underbite, crooked teeth, an openbite, overjet, or too much space between the teeth. This treatment straightens your teeth so that they look and function better. Straight teeth are easier to clean and less likely to get tooth decay or injured. Orthodontists use several different types of appliances or a combination of appliances to help you get your optimal smile so that you can smile with confidence. Over the course of several months or years, gentle pressure is applied to your teeth to move them to the position that is perfect for your jaw and mouth. Some of the appliances that are used are:

• Retainers
• Braces
• Headgear
• Removable appliances

Orthodontics can be used at any age and not just during the teenage years. More and more adults are opting for these treatments at much later stages of life. It is essential that proper oral hygiene be maintained during the orthodontic treatment to avoid decay and discolouration of the natural teeth.
